Improving construction management with decentralised production planning and control: exploring the production crew and manager perspectives through a multi-method approach

Decentralised, autonomous planning and control is a potential avenue of improvement in several fields, including construction. However, research on this topic, particularly involving the production crew viewpoint, remains scarce within construction management domain. This study explores effects decentralisation (and contrast, centralisation) for (PP&C) from combined perspectives crews managers, utilises these viewpoints to suggest improvements PP&C practices. The answers following questions: How do decentralisation/centralisation affect practices when considering both manager perspectives? Based aforementioned perspectives, how may overall be improved? To achieve holistic assessment, conducted as multi-method comparative case using survey-based social network analysis (SNA) semi-structured interviews. results show that decentralised offers benefits—such improved transparency, conflict resolution, commitment, lower stress—while allowing proactive building resilience, trust, ownership autonomy crews. In its current applied form, however, approach does not fully reach worker level.
